CHARACTERISTICS OF ANIMAL TERMS IN VIETNAMESE READING TEXTS FOR GRADES 2, 3, AND 4: A STRUCTURAL PERSPECTIVE

In the context of implementing the 2018 General Education Curriculum reform, teaching Vietnamese with a focus on developing students’ language competence requires teachers to have a deep understanding of the corpus characteristics in textbooks. This paper aims to meet that need by examining the characteristics of animal terms in the reading passages of Vietnamese textbooks for Grades 2, 3, and 4 in the Knowledge with Life series. Based on theoretical foundations of lexicon and term formation, the study surveys, classifies, and analyzes the system of animal terms found in these textbooks, focusing on three structural types of words (simple, compound, reduplicative) and phrases structure (head-modifier phrases and coordinative phrases). The results show that compound words and head-modifier phrases account for a large proportion, reflecting the diverse and vivid naming capacity of the Vietnamese in describing the natural world. These findings contribute additional data to Vietnamese lexicology and provide practical value for teaching, helping teachers to effectively exploit linguistic materials, expand students’ vocabulary, and foster linguistic thinking skills for primary school learners.
