LITERARY WORKS BY THE DUKE OF YEN PHAM CONG TRU: THE CONFORMITY WITH THE TRADITONAL AESTHETIC CONVENTIONS

The Vietnamese society in the 17th century witnessed changes which would shape the features of the country in the later centuries. As a man of that century, the Duke of Yen Pham Cong Tru (1600-1675) is well-known with many remarkable achievements. He was an engaged orthodox Confucian who participated in the court and composed literary works conforming with traditional aesthetic conventions. He uses traditional genres, being keen on conventional themes of pre-modern Vietnamese literature. Even though his literary works have not been evaluated as of the best ones in the history of Vietnamese literature, they are to some extent appreciated works in the eyes of later generations not due to their innovations but due to their conformity with the traditional aesthetic conventions of Confucian literature.
