The pig production sector is one of the significant sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within Vietnam’s agricultural sector, particularly in the context of the ongoing transition toward large-scale commercial farming systems. This study aims to assess the current status of GHG emissions from farm-scale fattening pig production, identify the main emission sources, and propose mitigation measures. The research methodology follows the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Guidelines (2006, 2019), using data collected from ten medium- and large-scale pig farms located in the suburban areas of Hanoi. The results showed that the average total GHG emissions amounted to 232,28 ± 51,70 kg CO₂e per pig per year. Emissions were generated from several sources, with indirect CO₂ emissions from electricity consumption and CH₄ and N₂O emissions from waste management being the main contributors. The results also showed that emission levels were affected by farm-prepared self-mixed feed rations, farm scale, electricity use, biogas system operation, and post-treatment waste management. Based on these findings, the study proposes several mitigation measures, including optimizing feed rations, reducing nitrogen and organic matter excretion, improving waste collection and treatment, enhancing biogas recovery and use, and improving on-farm electricity efficiency. These findings provide empirical data and support the development of greenhouse gas emission management strategies for farm-scale fattening pig production.
