EXPLORING LANGUAGE ATTITUDES TOWARD MOTHER TONGUE USE AMONG ETHNIC MINORITY STUDENTS AT TAN TRAO UNIVERSITY

This study was conducted to address the central question regarding the current state of language use and attitudes among ethnic minority students at Tan Trao University toward their mother tongues. The main objective was to determine the extent of use, awareness, and emotional attachment students have toward their native languages, thereby clarifying the relationship between language attitude and linguistic behavior in the contemporary higher education context. Methodologically, the study employed a quantitative empirical approach, utilizing an online survey administered via Google Forms to collect data from students of various ethnic minority backgrounds. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis to assess trends in mother tongue objectively use across different communicative settings. The findings revealed that mother tongues remain central to intra-community communication and the expression of cultural identity, although there are signs of declining language competence among younger generations. The students’ positive and proud attitudes toward their native languages constitute a crucial foundation for developing bilingual education and preserving ethnic minority languages. Overall, the study provides empirical evidence to inform policy-making and strategic efforts in safeguarding linguistic heritage within Vietnam’s higher education environment.
