Abstract

This study investigated the botanical characteristics, phytochemical composition, and antibacterial activity of Piper betle L. and Pluchea indica Less. collected in Tuyen Quang province, Vietnam. Morphological, microscopic, and powdered characteristics were analyzed, and phytochemical screening was performed using standard qualitative tests. Antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was evaluated by agar well diffusion and MIC methods. Both extracts contained several bioactive compounds and showed dose-dependent antibacterial activity against all tested strains. Piper betle exhibited stronger antibacterial effects, especially against Staphylococcus aureus (MIC = 468.75 µg/mL), while Pluchea indica showed moderate activity (MIC = 937.5 µg/mL). These findings support the potential use of both plants, particularly Piper betle, as natural antimicrobial agents.
